Two Years and Five Minutes of Dishwasher Annoyance

This post is about how procrastination makes you look kind of stupid sometimes.

We bought our house about two years ago, and like we’ve mentioned before, most of the appliances came with the house. Including our dishwasher. The dishwasher is relatively new and it works just fine, but ever since we moved in, we’ve been dealing with a half aesthetic-half convenience problem. When we opened the dishwasher, the left side of the front piece would kind of fall to the ground. There was a screw missing that held the front cover of the washer on the door frame. So it looked like this:

boo

The problem meant that anytime we opened the dishwasher, we had to hold on to the front piece and the door so they didn’t come apart. Or if we forgot to do that, we’d have to bang the front piece back into place when we closed the door. Like I said, the washer still worked, it was just annoying to have to worry with the door, and it didn’t exactly look awesome.

Since just about forever, I said I would take out one of the screws that held the front piece on on the right side and go to the hardware store for a match. Also since just about forever, I never did that.

But then a few days ago, in the middle of doing at least three other things, I found myself unscrewing the right side of the dishwasher door. It happened almost before I knew what I was doing. Then instead of going to the hardware store I went to my toolbox. (You know how every time you find a screw around the house, or take a screw out of something, you ask yourself “I could throw this away, but that’d be a waste. I wonder if I could use this screw in something else?” Yes, you do. It happens all the time.) I keep all the random screws I find in my toolbox (which is basically a one-tray tacklebox). So I matched the dishwasher screw to one that was the same diameter but just a little longer. After putting the right side screw back in its place, I tried the random screw from the toolbox. Ta-dow. Just like new.

Not exactly life changing stuff, I know. But I know everybody’s got little annoying problems around the house that get put off for lots of reasons. This just happened to be one of those that took 2 years and about 5 minutes to fix.
